The dementia sensory garden plays an important role in people’s daily lives at Stanfield Nursing Home. There are multiple elements that allow everyone to stay independent as well as providing opportunities to engage in hobbies and relaxation.
At our care home in Worcester we make sure to maintain normality through activities such as gardening. If those we care for wish to engage in this hobby we help them plant their favourite flowers, sweep the patio and general upkeep of the lawn. This also enhances the way they view our home as their home as our garden is their garden.
It is our mission to make living at Stanfield as close to living in a family home as possible, by mirroring what might go on in someone’s home. We strive to create a home-away-from-home feel with a warm, caring and friendly atmosphere.
Specialist Dementia Care
Patients living with dementia at Stanfield really benefit from the garden. We offer familiarity through the mundane task of gardening. As they re-enter the garden they will recognise the flowers they have planted and in turn recognise their growth. Seeing things in different stages helps to improve their memory and slows cognitive decline.
Our dementia sensory garden also helps by stimulating people’s minds through our water feature. Through fundraising efforts from relatives of residents here at our Worcester nursing home, money was collected and donated over time, to use for the benefit of the residents. With the money collated and by the request of a past resident during her end of life care, a fountain was installed.
This water fountain has enabled us to bring the Stanfield community together. People often commune around the fountain to socialise or listen to the relaxing fall of water, especially in summer. This form of relaxation is highly beneficial to those living with dementia as it may relieve some symptoms or help them reminisce.
